Description

Join us in celebrating 35 years of resistance through music by showcasing two exciting up-and-coming bands from San Francisco and Los Angeles as well three groups that were part of the very first Encuentro del Canto Popular back in 1982.

To mark this milestone, we are reuniting Latin American folk ensembles De Colores and Los Peludos; PLUS, Marci Manríquez will pay tribute to the life and work of her father, Rafael Manriquez, by assembling a talented group of musicians who will celebrate the music of Grupo Raíz. We will close out the celebration with Quitapenas, the renowned SoCal Tropical Afro Latin combo; as well as local powerhouse Soltrón, a 12-member band that blends Latin-jazz, Chicano rock, and samba batucada with strains of hip-hop and electronic music. The Encuentro will be held at The Chapel in San Francisco on December 11th and promises to be an event no one will want to miss.

Soltron

Soltrón

Born out of the rich arts community of San Francisco's Mission district, Soltrón reflects a native fusion of afro-caribbean rhythms, Latin rock, samba batucada laced with strains of hip-hop, jazz and electronic music. A 12-piece juggernaut with a relentlessly buoyant sound, the band features some of the Bay Area’s most exciting young players. Their music addresses gentrification, displaced youth and the struggle to survive while expressing the joy, beauty and pride of their cultural traditions and family ties.

Quitapenas

QUITAPENAS, one word – all caps, four syllables – all claps, gives you a taste of their rhythmic contagion. This tropical Afro-Latin combo was born under the warm California sun in 2011. They borrow aesthetics from the radical 60s, 70s and 80s. Each song echoes a remix of history and invites one to engage in the liberating evenings of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and beyond. The name means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a "pena" and the mission of QUITAPENAS is simple: to make you dance and leave you worriless.

los peludos

Los Peludos

Los Peludos brought to the Bay Area California-style movimiento music in the folk tradition established by Teatro Campesino and the United Farm Workers Union. Enrique and Antonio Ramirez brought their roots of traditional Mexican music along with Miguel Govea and they grooved the first Encuentro del Canto Popular with their song Aqui No Sera! condemning the US sponsored wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua.

De Colores

De Colores

De Colores performs Latin American folk music. Their songs are chosen for their message and for their cultural and traditional value. They choose music from all of the Latin American countries, each country claiming its own genre. To their repertoire of music, they also include music from the United States.

Grupo Raiz

Marci Manríquez y Amig@s with duo Payani Tribute to Grupo Raíz

Grupo Raíz came together at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley, California at the beginning of 1980. The group extended the work of Rafael Manríquez who had been singing Latin American music at peñas and solidarity events in northern California for over a year, forming a versatile six member performing group with a broad instrumental and vocal repertoire. The goals of the group were twofold: to make known the music and culture of the Latin American people, and to give support through their music to the resistance movement in Chile and to liberation movements in Latin America and throughout the world. Marci is the daughter of Rafael Manríquez and will be assembling an ensemble of musicians who will pay tribute to Grupo Raíz and the legacy of Rafael Manríquez.

Gabriel Escobar and Hector Zapana are directors and founders of the fusion Andean group Ajayu and duo Payani. In addition, Gabriel is lead director of the Anqari Collective
